personality
LYRIC LINE
On the surface, Elektra is a tomboyish, hard-nosed, and ambitious auror with workaholic tendencies that have led her to rise as high in the department as possible while not being a Lestrange. She is all of these things; having shed her Good Daughter image years ago, it’s a serious struggle to get her into anything but the hardy auror robes and boots on a regular basis. She’s got a kind of blunt determination that seems at odds with the cunning nature of most of her friends and family, and it’s impossible to deny her ambition.
She is, however, more cunning than most expect. Hardly unexpected, growing up as she did in one of the most popular shops the darker Knockturn Alley has to offer. Elektra was raised in an environment where learning the dark arts was as expected as it would be if it were a class at Hogwarts, where most of her parents’ friends were only loyal to a point, and where family loyalty only counted if you were sufficiently pure. Elektra is and was sufficiently pure for the Burkes and the Parkinsons, of course, but her best friend and cousin was not, and it has led her to a place where she has the expectation that she’ll need to be cleverer and sneakier in the event that the family turns on her. Elektra is a firm believer that the best way to teach a lesson is to make it hurt, and she leans heavily on the hex and the curse not just in the field but in the office and, frankly, the pub. She’s not quick to anger, per se, as much as she’s quick to vengeance.
Layered among these traits, traits that serve her extremely well in her work and relationships, is a warmly flirtatious way that seems at odds with with her day to day. Elektra is a tease, a vicious one if she doesn’t like you, and a good-natured one if you happen to be in her good books. She’s confident enough to tease her own boss, Rabastan Lestrange, not quite relentlessly when they’re off the clock - and that only has a little to do with the fact that he’s seven years her junior. Just as much is to do with another trait neatly layered in her tomboyish, blunt nature. Elektra is extremely good at reading people, extremely talented at pushing just exactly as far as she needs to get the result she wants, without crossing the line to where she has to pay the consequences.
history
LYRIC LINE
Family Reginald Burke (Father); Dahlia Parkinson Burke (Mother); Pallas Burke (Older Brother)
Elektra Burke was born at Burke Park, the large estate her parents maintained in the wilds of Yorkshire, four years after her elder brother Pallas was born. Her childhood and upbringing was everything that was expected for a pureblood lady of means and excellent connections; she was drilled in etiquette, fashion, and ladylike pursuits, was trained to be ornamental, charming and clever, the perfect wife for some pureblood heir. Elektra excelled at these lessons, of course; she was a Burke and a Parkinson, and she could do little else. But even as a little girl, she chafed at it. Why did she have to live a boring life of parties and babies just because she wasn’t a boy? Why did she have to steer generally clear of the fascinating delights her father sold to their friends and acquaintances?
Her rebellions started small, and the first was becoming the best of friends with her cousin Petia Parkinson. The daughter of her mother’s older brother and exactly her age, Petia would have been the perfect friend in Dahlia Burke’s eyes if not for the fact that Petia’s mother was a Muggle, Merlin forbid. At first, Elektra hung around Petia completely for the way it made Dahlia twitch in dislike, but in time they found they had more in common than she thought initially. In time, they went off to Hogwarts together, were sorted into Slytherin together, and remained mostly inseparable for all of it. Elektra’s time there was easy enough; she was a pretty girl, rich, pureblood, in Slytherin House. She excelled at her classes, and formed a...thing with one of the Avery boys to keep her mother off her back until graduation. Petia, as a halfblood Parkinson, fared less easily, and while her best friend was more than able to take care of herself, there was a reason Elektra left Hogwarts one of the best in her class at hexes and curses.
She and Edmund Avery became engaged shortly after graduation for two reasons - one, it seemed the thing to do after she’d strung him along for half their school years and two, it was a really excellent way to keep her parents off her back as she used her superior N.E.W.T. scores to get into the auror training program - and then was assigned cases that took her all over the continent of Europe. It was when she was on one of these trips that she received word that her fiance had died in a what was being billed as a magical accident but she suspected was Edmund picking on the wrong Muggleborn at the wrong time. His death mostly engendered a sense of relief in her, as it was getting long enough along that she was going to have to actually plan a wedding or get rid of the fiance altogether. At least this way she could pretend to be observing a period of mourning.
She’s been milking that period of mourning for all its worth in the last few years, using the time to claw up the ranks of the Office of the Aurors until she’s gotten herself the senior-most position among the squad, second only to Rabastan Lestrange himself. Unfortunately, that rise has been noted by her family, who is beginning to panic that their only daughter is going to be completely useless when it comes to building alliances with the other families.
abilities
LYRIC LINE
CHARMS | TRANSFIGURATION | POTIONS | HERBOLOGY | DADA
Obviously excelled at all of them; she’s an auror and did not get into the training program on the strength of her name. Charms and DADA are among her best subjects, thanks to her extracurricular practice with jinxes and hexes and the large number of dark magical objects she’s grown up around.
DARK ARTS
She’s a Burke, of Borgin and Burkes. She grew up learning dark magic before she ever went to Hogwarts, and hardly stopped practicing it once she left. How else is she able to apprehend criminals if she doesn’t fight the way they do?
MAGICAL COMBAT
Again, as an auror, she is highly proficient. Not only is she an auror, but she’s the best auror in the department, and often sent off into war zones. She can more than hold her own with most witches and wizards around.
HEALING MAGIC
Enough to heal wounds when needed, basic first aid level competency.
WANDLESS/NONVERBAL MAGIC
She’s mastered certain spells nonverbally, spells where she doesn’t want someone to be warned ahead of time, and is fairly proficient with wandless magic - though still something she needs to practice.
DIVINATION
Ew, no.
